Popular short video app TikTok faces scrutiny from Australian watchdogs amid security, data concerns

Days after being banned in India, TikTok has come under scrutiny in Australia amid rising data privacy concerns. The Chinese-owned video-making app is being investigated for any risks it may pose to users, government sources told Reuters.

TikTok parent company ByteDance opened an office in Australia recently. Offices of both the Attorney-General and the Home Affairs are discussing TikTok’s operations, the sources said.

A few days ago, TikTok also wrote to Australian MPs claiming to be “caught in the middle” amid rising tensions between nations, saying it is being used as a “political football.”
