Indians to get chip-based e-passports from next year: Report

In a significant move, the central government has started the process for issuing e-passports for all citizens. It would select an agency soon that will set up the IT infrastructure to implement the project, Economic Times reported.

If media reports are to be believed, Indian citizens are likely to start getting e-passports starting 2021. At present, passports issued to Indian citizens are printed on booklets.

It should be mentioned here that India had issued 20,000 official as well as diplomatic e-passports on a trial basis with an electronic microprocessor chip embedded in them.

This move would make passports difficult to forge and facilitate quicker immigration for international passengers.
